Thursday, July 30th @ 2:50 P.M.
This edition of the weekly will pose a look at the rosters for the Weekend League, a couple very important updates, and pose a couple of questions that will be answered come throughout the Beta Test's timeframe.
Weekend League Draft
Andrew Terry became Weather Warrior's Roger Goodell this week, as the Weekend League draft has concluded...well, sorta. Players from last year were originally drafted first, followed by some of our newest players. Made the Weekend League decision and didn't get drafted? We'll have a Midseason draft, to add a 5th or 6th player to each team. If you were unsure about it, but see how it goes and want to be in the Midseason draft, do us a favor and let us know if you want back in! The captains were set by last year's playoff final positions (last 8 standing) and 2 top Regular Season players.
Just a reminder of how the Weekend League works: Players work together as a team to beat another team. The captain selects a region for their team to pick in, and the best 2 of 3 days for each player get counted towards an average. Team with better average wins the match. Most matches won, wins! No playoffs involved! And yes, you can use your pick for that region as your regular season pick, and vice versa (Only if it's available on both maps).

Dolphins
Captain: Solid8Fate (BustCityKing for S2)

Lions
Captain: BlizzardJon

Notable Info
BlizzardJon opted out last season, but would have had the 2nd highest available regular season average, at the end of the season, hence him being a captain.

BoldColdPowerRanking
This is an unbiased prediction based off of last year's regular season results. With a lot of returning players, some are going to be better this year. I will keep track of a power ranking, to show you guys how the teams stack up, based on experience and past results.
1. Hawks: If your team is featuring last year's champion, a dangerous 5th place player, an admin who knows the ins and outs, and a dark horse enthusiast who almost had upset of the year, then you're most likely the favorite!
2. Tigers: Easily the most interesting group of the bunch. DQB had great consistency. JRN785's Pro level experience will back up the consistency. Keya's sneaky picks can be dangerous. ConnorWx could be a very competitive rookie. I feel the experience and star power of this group will have them as a favorite.
3. Bulldogs: The runner-up teamed up with the a dangerous SDT, the guy who caught some lightning in a bottle moments, and someone who could be "comeback player" this season is a great set of players. They have a chance to pull off some scares.
4. Dolphins: No offense to the "___ Curse" players, but you have to fear it's still there for Season 2. Will the decision for BustCityKing to not pick his daughter cost them? We'll see. It's still a strong team.
5. Cobras: Most Underrated team in the Weekend League. SEMich is very consistent, and almost made the Championship. Both J. Mike Sheard and doctorCrab can be super, super sneaky. NILChasers is new, but if he can learn from this young set of players, we could be in for a show!
6. Knights: SwagWxChicago exposed players last season on 1-day locks. He has a boom or bust team, and they might all start off slow.
7.Lions: BlizzardJon is one of the strongest competitors. He can help SS2023 (one of the most dangerous players in the Passive/Aggressive lock strategy) be a stronger force. Srmarts and denys_k17 will try to make this #PAPosse a force.
8. Dragons: The Dragons feature a player who has the most diverse strategy, a rookie, a player that Barrowed his way to 16th place (when it was a little late), and the player that uses the "11:59" strategy. This mix might start off slow, but if they mesh together, they'll rise in the rankings!
9. Wolverines: CHS & NH_WX are very under the radar. However, Umar & NorthCarolina_Wx could be very, very quiet. I think some growing pains for one of our youngest teams will happen. They can only grow!
10. Gators: This is a very young, slightly inexperienced team. The #24 found a golden horseshoe upsetting some strong players (including the #1 seed, mind you) in the playoffs. The #20 from last year also made this team, and had some hit or miss days. Two new players will also be on the team. Might be similar to the Wolverines. Good motivation tool? I think so!
New Rule Change
There is only one rule change that is notable for all players. We received some interesting comments from players about how hot and cold picking (picking for temperature, and not precip) is not really a "skill" for Weather Warrior. We looked back at last season, looked at the new, and realized that people were still going to expose the system anyway.
We are going to make it so that the part of the game that really matters, that being precip, is the way to win. So, what we have decided to do is only allow the multiplier IF a non-zero precip amount occurs.
Notes to know
- You still need at least 150 points overall. If you have .75" of rain, and a 30 mph gust and 5 DD, then you will not be eligible for a bonus.
- You can have a 0 Degree Day (65 avg.), and still get the multiplier on wind and precip.
- If you do pick a cold/warm spot, Raw Score + Warning Bonuses are the only things you will get.
Clarification on Multipliers
We've also received a couple questions and some comments on confusion about the multipliers. Let me settle your concerns and questions.
There are three sets of multipliers. 150 is the first tier, 200 is the second tier, & 250 is the third tier bonus. The multipliers are shown as followed, below!
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/579600_514484f1ab9e49d1a981be719b74e48c~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_624,h_152,al_c,q_85,enc_auto/579600_514484f1ab9e49d1a981be719b74e48c~mv2.png)
You do have the option to switch your pick, BUT...you will get penalized in the bonus department, and get half of what the bonus would be on the new lock.
Let me clarify this further
You make a 4-day lock today on Wilmington, NC.
Tomorrow you see the track for Isaias shifts more SW and see North Myrtle Beach will score better.
You make your switch on your personal pick sheet. Press "Pick Switch".
It will then count as a 3-day lock.
If you looked at last season's multipliers, you would have been to keep your multiplier, but divide the multiplier by 2, and you'll get your score
Ex: Let's assume you made it to 215 points, you would've been able to get a 1.3x multiplier if this was your first pick for that date.
Since you switched it, it would be worth a 1.15x multiplier instead.
This multiplier penalty rewards players who spot on predict the right spot, while penalizing players who constantly have to change their picks, based on the models. If you're afraid of switching your pick because you feel it's too risky to make a far out lock, then try to limit your locks to 2-3 day. The 3-day lock is the most "passive/aggressive" strategy in Weather Warrior. It's medium-range, and it'll give time for models to verify, compared to a 6-day lock. There's still the risk you miss it, but you'll find that the multipliers (if not a switched pick) are fairly modest (1.2x, 1.3x, 1.4x) for the points range.
Points Format Experiment
ICYMI, last week, we have decided to test something in the Beta Test. The points format will still go by average, but we'll be grading your average, by the week.
How will we do that? We'll stack up the averages against everyone else, and at the end of the week, you get "Convective Chalice" points for a high average in the week. Have a tough couple of weeks? It won't affect you full-season run, towards an average. Instead, you could benefit, with a quieter week!
If you score the most points, you're regular season champs! We will preview the points placements, sometime next week. We will try to make it balanced, yet reward players for having a good average.
If there's a way to know what your eligibility is to get picks in: Treat it like normal pace. If you saw on our website, you basically need 3 picks a week, or once every 2.3r days. You'll still get to 45 picks doing it that way.
However, for the beta test, there is no set limit, since this is all for experimental concerns.
Questions To Look Forward To
As Season 2 approaches on Monday, there are a set of questions to ask about the Beta Test. These can be considered thought-provoking.
1. Will the Beta Test give us a way to find Weather Warrior's niche?
2. Will the Weekend League be a success?
3. Will the opt-out ratio be alleviated with three shorter seasons, rather than one big one?
4. Will Day One of the season live up to the hype of the last two season beginnings (Regular & #MesoscaleMadness)
5. Will anyone save locations that could get cycled out because of "no interest"
6. What players will improve their skills in the Beta Test?
7. What will happen with some player's strategy, now that cold points don't count towards a multiplier?
8. Who is going to be the first person to take advantage of the new multipliers?
9. Who will use International locations as potential "catnap" sites
10. Where will players go in the regular season, knowing there are more options?
11. When will we see a 1,000 point day, again?
12. Which of the 1,000 locations will end up being underrated?
13. Which Rookie will take over the spotlight in the Beta Test?
14. How will the Weekend League fare, overall?
15. How long will it take for players to figure out their perfect strategy?
16. Why did Weather Warrior's Beta Test end up as a success? (We hope)
Locations Reminder
Please note that every week, 100 new locations will cycle in. Please remember that you can pick any of the cycled locations available for that week, for any date! This is also basically our way of seeing what locations you feel should be added.
Remember, we replace the spots that didn't get picked (except for CLI Report, Int'l, and player PWS') with the ones that were used the most. If you want to save a location, pick it! Even use your mulligan on it, if you're gonna use that spot for a bad weather day!
Notable Week 1 Cycled Locations include
Anza Borrego, CA (UCAB)
Brookhaven, MS (K1R7)
Clovis (Airport), NM (KCVN)
Easton, MD (KESN)
Hemet, CA (KHMT)
Knoxville (Downtown), TN (KDKX)
Lake Havasu City, AZ (KHII)
Los Angeles (Whiteman), CA (KWHP)
Selma, AL (KSEM)
Shreveport (Downtown), LA (KDTN)
Spearfish, SD (KSPF)
Tooele, UT (KTVY)
Tulsa (Jones), OK (KRVS)
Victoria (Hartland), BC (CWVV)
Williams, AZ (KCMR)
Week 2's Locations will be announced next week.
The Last Word
We currently have 56 players signed up for Weather Warrior's Season 2/Beta Test. Let's look at the stats on how many players are in each category.
37 players are a part of the Enthusiast AND Novice Category
About 20 players are rookies for this season!
We'll announce Rookie of the Year players, next week!
We have 14 Met Students
We have 4 Pro Meteorologists.
I am issuing a challenge for everyone: Persuade any Pro Meteorologists you know to enter our competition! NWS, TV, Weather Consultants, Recent Grads, you name it! We'd love to have stacked fields in each category. With over 60% being enthusiasts, we want enough players in each, so if there is a play-in round, we can actually have players in those fields to decide a spot in #MesoscaleMadness.
We hope to have at least 8-10 Pro Meteorologists in that class! For Pros reading this and wondering if you'll have time to do it? Easy. You just need not even 30-40 minutes a week to do well. If you at least know what's going on, you'll do fine!
