Weather Warrior Weekly Edition #2.01

Edited by BoldColdPicker

We're back! Might have been a short hiatus, but we've returned. For those unaware, this is a beta test for Season #2, which kicks off, officially, in November. The Beta Test begins Monday, August 3rd. Weather Warrior will guarantee Monday starts in the regular season. The idea of the beta test will be to make sure all of our ideas work, and where we can improve on, if necessary.

Picking

The first question that can be answered is about a pick limit. No. The Beta Test will have an unlimited pick limit, meaning you can play every day, or you can play a half a dozen times. This will give rookies a chance to test the waters and see what strategies work for them, and understand scoring. I would recommend doing 3 picks a week, so you can be accustomed to the normal pace.

Locations: Cycles & Diversity

As for locations, you will have a guaranteed 1,000 locations each week. 700 of these guaranteed locations come from the CONUS. 100 of these are Canadian. 50 of these come from US Territories, Alaska, or Hawaii. 50 more come from Greenland, Pacific Islands, Latin America, & the Caribbean. That leads to 900 locations.

What's the other 100, you might ask? Each week 100 locations, that are not full-time, cycle in and out of the map. We will keep you posted on which locations switch out, every week. Not every place will be cycled in the season, however. Some lake effect spots might not be available in the winter, while summer may not see the typical heat locations. It is a 36-week cycle, meaning the next time you see a certain city could be in a much different season.

If a few places seem to have huge draws, and are being used a lot in the week, we will try and make them in the full-time locations for the future season. However, it comes at the cost of one location being removed. It only counts for CONUS, and does not apply for the user-submitted PWS', like Howell, NJ or Plain City, OH.

Points

Points in the Beta Test will be a little different. Rather than going for a set # of picks, we will be conducting a points-based standing, based off of weekly averages.

How this works is this: Whatever your average is for the week, will be scored against the others, and you'll get points for finishing better than the others. Points and placements will be featured in the next weekly, next Thursday. It's pretty simple. Just keep accumulating points and position yourself higher by doing better, or catching other players napping!

We may still keep a table for overall average, so you can see how you'd fare in a season.

Multiplier Update

Since there has been some concern about the heat or cold having an extreme advantage, during the season, our multipliers will not count for places with straight up cold or heat. Your pick must have 1" of rain or 5" of snow (equivalent to 100 precip points) to achieve a multiplier. However, scores must hit multiplier levels to get the multiplier (at least 150).

So, if your strategy was to pick Barrow every day, or some northern Canadian spot for the cold, and the heat being dominant in the summer, then you may be affected by this. You can still get good points, but cannot score a multiplier during the peak of the season.

The goal is to still pick the worst weather, but it does change the strategy of picking mundane weather, as well as extreme temperature-based weather.

Live It Up For The Weekend League

We also will be introducing a Weekend League. This league is a team-based competition, where captains select where the team goes, and they work together to make picks to beat other teams. Amy regular season pick is eligible, as long as it is based on your region, and vice versa. No playoffs. No prize but bragging rights. Just whatever team wins the most in a 9-week round robin.

How does one sign up? When registering, select yes under the "Weekend League" field, and you'll be put in a draft pool. You will work on a team with other players, and it may help your scores greatly, especially if you're struggling.

Week 1's Location Cycle Update

Week 1's extra 100 locations have great diversity. Although, you will notice that places will be all over the place on the map.

You will have 17 additional Canadian locations at your leisure. You will have places in the Pacific like French Micronesia, Vanuatu, & Solomon Islands. There are some Panama & Honduras sites in Latin America, too. For Caribbean fans, you might like seeing a few places in Cuba & the Bahamas, in case we get a tropical system.

As for the US, you will have a few cities gaining a 2nd station for the week, including a few extra heat spots to test the no multiplier scores.

Notable Week 1 Cycled Locations include

  • Anza Borrego, CA (UCAB)

  • Brookhaven, MS (K1R7)

  • Clovis (Airport), NM (KCVN)

  • Easton, MD (KESN)

  • Hemet, CA (KHMT)

  • Knoxville (Downtown), TN (KDKX)

  • Lake Havasu City, AZ (KHII)

  • Los Angeles (Whiteman), CA (KWHP)

  • Selma, AL (KSEM)

  • Shreveport (Downtown), LA (KDTN)

  • Spearfish, SD (KSPF)

The Last Word

Weather Warrior Season 2 picks begin tomorrow. However, picks are not allowed for 7/25-8/2. The season begins August 3rd, so only long-range picks are allowed. Might be best to wait until next week to start considering your picks.

Please do everything you can to promote Weather Warrior's beta test. It is open to the public. Signing up takes less than 90 seconds, and the game is 100% free!
